Chennai, the capital of the southern Indian state Tamil
Nadu, is battling the worst rains in 100 years. From last month, the southern
city has been transformed from a bustling hub of over 4.5 million people to a
partly submerged wreck.
More than 188 people have died in Tamil Nadu due to torrential
rain havoc, and thousands have been forced to evacuate from their homes.
“State police, fire and rescue services, state and national disaster response
forces and coast guard are ready to rescue people using boats,” Tamil Nadu
chief minister, J.Jayalalithaa, said last day. “Adequate precautionary measures
are being taken to protect people.”
The government struggles in the rescue operations
due to maximum percent of the city is submerged with water. The Chennai airport
is closed with cancelling all the flights. Some more fears are still to come
like the rain will continue next 48 hours
Already the govt. has started releasing 20,000
cubic feet per second of water from Chembarambakkam reservoir, the highest
volume of outflow in several years.
